5 Rewarding Day Trip Destinations from Sheffield by Coach

Matt Crisp August 4, 2025

If you are in Sheffield, you are perfectly placed at the heart of the country for day trips out, with easy access to the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales, and the charming towns of the east coast. Here’s a guide to some of the top coach-friendly destinations within easy reach of Sheffield.

All offer great group experiences, and with a private coach or minibus hire, your journey will be comfortable, convenient, and stress-free from start to finish.

Chatsworth House, Bakewell

Chatsworth House is one of England’s finest stately homes, and it’s just a short, scenic drive from Sheffield. With lavish interiors, vast gardens, a working farmyard, and seasonal exhibitions, it’s ideal for school trips, photography clubs, historical societies, and retirement groups.

For an in-depth experience, book a private guided tour of the house and gardens, including a detailed commentary on the artwork and interiors from the Devonshire Collections. You’ll also be guided around the historic 105-acre gardens in a covered golf buggy, with the option to continue exploring privately after the three-hour tour ends.

At weekends, you can also take a behind-the-scenes tour of working areas rarely seen by the public, including the old kitchens, plunge pool, cellar and theatre. Meanwhile, there are many activities taking place throughout the summer aimed at families and children, including the Big Tree Climb, face painting, nature walks, and arts and crafts.

Castleton, Peak District National Park

The Peak District is on the doorstep of Sheffield, and it is possible to be among dramatic windswept landscapes within a short drive. Less than an hour away by coach is the popular village of Castleton at the head of Winnats Pass (a limestone gorge) and the Hope Valley. The ruins of Peverill Castle, an ancient Norman fortress, stand on a peak above the village.

The hills surrounding the village were once ancient coral sea beds, and evidence remains in the form of a network of mineral-rich caves where fluorspar is mined. Known locally as Blue John, this attractive blue and yellow mineral is used to make jewellery and ornaments, which are sold in the many gift shops around the village.

There are four show caverns where you can book a guided tour to view the Blue John stone and the unique stalactite formations. Afterwards, you can enjoy sweeping views of the Peak District from the top of Mam Tor, where there is also the remains of an ancient Iron Age fort.

Buxton and Poole’s Cavern

About an hours’ drive from Sheffield is the spa town of Buxton, which is famous for its attractive Georgian architecture, Pavilion Gardens, and opera house. It’s an ideal destination for wellness fans, with two thermal spa venues and numerous health and beauty based services for some chilled out pampering sessions.

The town has a lively arts scene, with live music performances, art exhibitions, standup comedy nights and much more taking place throughout the summer and beyond.

Poole’s Cavern is one of the country’s finest show caves, with delicate crystal formations in the 300ft cavern illuminated by a state of the art LED system. Take a guided 45-minute tour,  and explore the visitor centre where you can learn about the geology of the caves, and the ancient societies who first made use of them.

Lincoln

Often overlooked in favour of York, Lincoln is a beautiful city with a stunning cathedral, a medieval castle, and a lovely mix of independent shops and eateries. It’s a manageable journey of about one and a half hours from Sheffield.

Steep Hill offers charming views (and a bit of a workout!), while the castle and Magna Carta vault provide real educational value. Coach access is good and most attractions are walkable from central drop-off points.

The Yorkshire Wildlife Park, Doncaster, South Yorkshire

A fantastic destination for children’s clubs, schools, and family-focused days out, this walk-through wildlife park offers the chance to see lions, giraffes, polar bears and more.

There’s coach parking on-site, plenty of picnic areas, and discounted group rates. The site is accessible for all ages and abilities.
